The Giveaway is now closed thank you.
And I've finished my square Oakshott Cottons quilt.
I still think I prefer rectangular quilts but I do like this exception to my preference.
As others have already said, it is really quite hard to catch the iridescent glow that a lot of the shot cottons give off.
While thinner to work with than regular quilting weight cottons, if you handle them carefully, they are not difficult to work with. I didn't have to use any starch on them to get them to play nicely.
I also included a few Kaffe Fassett shot cottons in this quilt and if I were to compare the two, although the Kaffe Fassett shot cottons are not as expensive, I think I prefer the handle and glow that you get from the Oakshott shot cottons.
Quilting was just a simple grid system either side of the seams and then organic straight(ish) lines for the border.
The back is just some bits and bobs. The main piece of fabric I've had over 10 years...there was a time when paisleys were all the rage. I wonder if that makes the back of the quilt retro now?
I also manage to balls it up and cut too short on the width. After it was already quilted I added in a couple of extra inches (on the left) and I actually quite like the little injection of the secondary fabric in there. Well I would say that.
Note to self: pick all the threads off before you start taking close-ups.
Would you like to try some Oakshott cottons?
Michael at Oakshott Cottons has very kindly provided this:
This is stunning! Well, you know I have been working with Oakshotts a lot lately. I have a lot of Kaffe's as well, and given the choice I would work with Oakshotts, although I love them both. It's supposed to be 80 degrees here.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! And what a nice give away...thanks for the chance to win. It's a drippy 55degrees here in Georgia, USA but the sun is trying to peek out. Perfect for quilting!

Linda on travjonuk@yahoo.com
I have never even seen Oakshott, let alone quilted with it. It sounds lovely. Today I am on a boat in the San Juan Islands, where it is 48 degrees F. If I had the patience to learn another language at this point in my life, it would be Spanish. I think that would be the most useful second language here in the US. But my secret desire is to be fluent in French!
ReplyDeleteTemp. today is mild mid 60's. Love those cottons!
ReplyDeleteIt's finally spring in Poland: 7 Celsius degrees in the morning and 12 during the day (althought it's not so lovely yet, because it rains, but still...)
ReplyDeleteAm a follower and would learn to speak Spanish.
ReplyDeleteI would love to learn French (I was learning German and English - after a few years break I can still communicate in English, but not in German:(

ReplyDeleteI am also a follower! I would love to improve my french I am pretty rusty.
ReplyDeleteIt's about 6°C here and fretty. I love your quilt and Oakshotts (and agree that I prefer them to KF shot cottons - they feel a bit, well, flimsy!) - what's next on your list of projects?

ReplyDeleteI would like to remember and improve upon the Brazilian Portuguese I could once (mostly) speak!

ReplyDeleteIt was 73 F on Monday - one glorious day! - but we have dropped back down to 37 F and WINDY! I took the girls out to trim up the fruit trees this morning and put the baby in her snow suit. It was bitter! On the bright side, the crocuses are up and I had 5 daffodils open up this morning. Spring is trying.
ReplyDeleteI thought you guys might have an earlier spring there?
I think I would like to learn Spanish. My husband travels to Mexico/South America regularly and it would be fun to be able to go with him and speak the language. Right now I try to mix the few Spanish words I know with French and hope they understand the gist of it. :)

Summertime...at last!!!
ReplyDeleteI've already learned to speak English and German (besides Dutch) but I think one day I would like to learn Italian, for I love that country so much!

ReplyDeleteIt's lovely weather today with sun and a clear sky and temperatures in the 50s.
Thanks for the chance!
It's not brilliant here. After a couple of sunny days, we're back to a dreary, grey 9C, and we'll likely get rain within the next hour or so. No doubt it will last all weekend. Thanks for the chance to win such pretty, cheery fabric.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I'm a follower. I'd like to learn Spanish. And then I'd like to spend my winters in a place where it is spoken!
ReplyDeleteFabulous quilt. It`s a warm weather today with sun and bright day and temperature was 22ºC.Thanks for the giveawat!!

ReplyDeleteHi again
ReplyDeleteI do follow your blog on bloglovin. I would love to learn Icelandic because it sounds so quirky. And who doesn't love Bjorks accent when she speaks English. I wonder how a British accent sounds to the Icelanders - probably not as cool!

ReplyDeleteI follow your blog in RSS reader. I learned Italian in college, but haven't kept it up.
ReplyDeleteIt's in the high 60's and drizzly here. Those shot cottons are gorgeous! I love your quilt.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower. I really wish I knew more Spanish. There have been so many times I could have used it. I studied French in school and almost never use any of it.
ReplyDeleteApparently it has been 9 degrees here in this part of East Sussex. The pouring rain has meant I haven't ventured out much. Positively balmy in comparison to the snow last week.
ReplyDeleteThe temperature in Sunny NC (USA) is just above 80 Ferenheight.

ReplyDeleteThis quilt is so fun. It's a pity I can't see it in person, I can imagine how the shot cotton glows.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was lovely 15C today (59F?) - finally spring (only a few days ago we still had 0C).

ReplyDeleteYou know I'm a follower! If I were to learn a second language it would probably be German. I don't know why, but I have always been fascinated it and my husband's grandmother immigrated from Germany during WW2 so that made me even more interested.
ReplyDeleteI am a follower! It's about 80 here.
ReplyDeleteOf course I'm a follower of your blog.
ReplyDeleteWell, if we assume that I know English well enough (my mother tongue is Polish), the language I'd love to learn would be Swedish (I had a 2-year course but I'm starting to forget it). Oh, and learning Dutch would be great, too.
Long and dreary winter here too in Northern IN....40 degrees right now and another grey day....itching for a bit of warmth! Would love to try the Oakshott cottons! Thanks for posting.

I really do hope that someday I'll be in the right place at the right time and with enough spending money to get to come home with some Oakshot cottons. I do love the way they look.
ReplyDelete57 here in New Mexico--fortunately, our highest wind gust was "only" 29 mph--but spring and winds are inevitably linked where I live!

ReplyDeleteI am a follower and it is 49 degrees (F) in drizzly Auburn, Washington (south of Seattle). The sky is the color of cement. That is spring in Washington state. I took French for 3 years in high school and wish I retained more of it. My teacher was Polish by birth, married a Norwegian, taught French and German at the high school, also spoke Spanish and Russian and was having our Vietnamese foreign exchange student teach her that language. We Americans are slackers when it comes to foreign languages.

ReplyDeleteThe temperature here (in western Sydney) today is predicted to be 29°C (84°F) but it's only 19°C (66°F) now (at 10am). We are in the middle of autumn, staring down the barrel towards winter but since the temperature then can be as warm as it is right now, I don't think we have too much to complain about!)
ReplyDeleteIMANI drove from the coast of the US where I live to the mountains today. I think it was supposed to be around 80 degrees at home today and it was around 70 in the mountains. It's beautiful.

I'm already a follower & would like to be fluent in French. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was 70 and sunshine here today - I loved it! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a follower via google reeder. I've spent a lot of time studying French for my area of history, but I don't really have anyone to practice my speaking skills on. :-/ I would definitely like to brush up on that!
