Stitching just because

After the last few months of production line quilt assembling, I had accumulated quite a few ideas in my head of quilts I'd like to make and this was the first one to become a reality.

Earlier in the year I purchased a Triangler ruler and the accompanying book.

Perverse as it may sound, I was attracted to them because I didn't have half of quilty blog land telling me I needed them. I'd also seen the book (which is more of a booklet) and liked the variety of kaleidoscope patterns you could create with the ruler, all from piecing it in rows.

And in truth, the booklet should be a book. There is so much information crammed into just 20 pages and ideas to experiment with and try out that I actually don't know why more people aren't singing this booklet's praises. I think it's money well worth spent.

I chose to kick off my use of the ruler with the cover quilt, which is called Cosmos.

I knew I wanted to go scrappier than the original version and I knew I wanted to use as many of my Anna Maria Horner fabrics and I knew I wanted it to be bright and cheerful and that was my starting point.

And I've loved piecing it. Granted there are quite a few points you need to match up and a fair bit of cutting if you go for a decently large size (approx 70" x 76" in this case) but it was worth it. I cut and pieced 25 kaleidoscope coloured shapes and it was great to showcase so many different fabrics.

The pattern suggested using white as a background but I decided instead to use three AMH fabrics (different colours, same print) for the background just to keep the eyes even more interested. I also used two different complimentary fabrics for the star points where the pattern has you using one.

I love it.
I really love it.

It's just so completely happy and fun and random and makes me realise why I love quilting so very much.

And I've missed that feeling these past few months.

I feel I'm back :-)

  10. Wow. Just, wow. That is the BEST feeling! I love the different scales of fabric you are using. I love AMH but a lot of the ones I have are very large scale. And that background in genius! Way to go. :)

  11. Perfect! I agree, some blogs are not about sewing anymore, they're just telling you what you should be buying. I loved your soy amado quilts but it is nice to see some of your own work again.

  24. this is WONDERFUL. I've enjoyed following your progress with the Soy Amado quilts (and have a deep respect for your dedication to the project) but I've also missed seeing some of your original creations - I find your work incredibly inspiring. You have a great eye - thanks for sharing this and the information about the triangle ruler! I've been considering trying out some triangles, I'll have to look into it :)

  25. I love your riot of colours, it is such a happy looking quilt. I think you were absolutely right so steer away from white as a background. Though I enjoyed seeing all the Soy Amado quilts it's nice to see all your creative juices flowing in your own quilts.

  26. That is so beautiful! Glad you got to do some sewing 'just because'. That often leads to the best stuff. And i totally get you, the internet can sometimes overkill great things and it's nice to work on something you aren't seeing all over social media.

I, too, am a very eclectic, scrappy person as a rule and this quilt is so me -- I'd love to make one. Where can this booklet be purchased? I have not seen it before.

  37. It's magnificent and very, very 'you'! I'm with you on the 'everyone is telling me I need to buy/watch/read ____ but it's putting me off getting it/watching it/reading it' - the more something is talked about before it's available, the less I want it!! (It's particularly relevant to telly programmes - the more trailers I see, the less inclined I am to watch the programme when it's on!)

Enjoy sewing for enjoyment and just for the sake of it, you deserve it!

  38. Not at all perverse - sometimes I want to do something that the blogging world isn't telling me to do. And I've been eyeing this booklet. This might be the push I need!

  43. I love it! It is sooo you. And you finished it sooo quickly!

About the Soy Amado quilts: Sometimes big worthwhile projects can turn into a test of willpower and endurance, but you did it! And there are so many children who's lives are a bit better because of you. Thanks for keeping going even when quilting turned from a joy into a chore.

It was fun seeing the US package of blocks turn into quilts. (I made the crayon one at a guild meeting last year. Pretty fun.)

  47. I love your use of color in this quilt. The AMH fabric is so beautiful and your placement is spot on. It was a bold decision to use prints in the pieces between the blocks and looks perfect in your quilt. Looking forward to seeing all of your fmq when it is finished.
