Earlier in the year I purchased a Triangler ruler and the accompanying book.
Perverse as it may sound, I was attracted to them because I didn't have half of quilty blog land telling me I needed them. I'd also seen the book (which is more of a booklet) and liked the variety of kaleidoscope patterns you could create with the ruler, all from piecing it in rows.
And in truth, the booklet should be a book. There is so much information crammed into just 20 pages and ideas to experiment with and try out that I actually don't know why more people aren't singing this booklet's praises. I think it's money well worth spent.
I chose to kick off my use of the ruler with the cover quilt, which is called Cosmos.
I knew I wanted to go scrappier than the original version and I knew I wanted to use as many of my Anna Maria Horner fabrics and I knew I wanted it to be bright and cheerful and that was my starting point.
And I've loved piecing it. Granted there are quite a few points you need to match up and a fair bit of cutting if you go for a decently large size (approx 70" x 76" in this case) but it was worth it. I cut and pieced 25 kaleidoscope coloured shapes and it was great to showcase so many different fabrics.
The pattern suggested using white as a background but I decided instead to use three AMH fabrics (different colours, same print) for the background just to keep the eyes even more interested. I also used two different complimentary fabrics for the star points where the pattern has you using one.
I love it.
I really love it.
It's just so completely happy and fun and random and makes me realise why I love quilting so very much.
And I've missed that feeling these past few months.

I feel I'm back :-)
This quilt is so YOU! So very lovely in all it's wonderful scrappiness.:)
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful, colourful, fun, pointy, scrappy quilt!! I'm so happy that you've done some quilting for 'you' I hope this one's for keeps.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I also have the book and ruler and it is indeed full of lovely patterns. I made the Christmas Tree table runner. It was quick and turned out so well, can't wait to gift it at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteIt really is happy and fun. I love how you changed up the points to make them two colors. It adds a lot of movement to the top.
ReplyDeleteSo cheerful and bright! Isn't it fun to get inspired again?
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! So glad you're pleasure and enjoyment are back.
ReplyDeleteI REALLY love it too! It's very you Alison - I can't think of anyone else who would use those three AMH prints as a background and make them work so well! Googling triangler ruler now...
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is absolutely beautiful. I've been saving my AMH fabrics for awhile now, just waiting for the right quilt pattern to come along. You've inspired me! Thanks
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Looks complicated. Love all the varieties of colours and fabrics.
ReplyDeleteWow. Just, wow. That is the BEST feeling! I love the different scales of fabric you are using. I love AMH but a lot of the ones I have are very large scale. And that background in genius! Way to go. :)
ReplyDeletePerfect! I agree, some blogs are not about sewing anymore, they're just telling you what you should be buying. I loved your soy amado quilts but it is nice to see some of your own work again.
ReplyDeleteSo amazing. I am inspired to try my ruler --or at least find it.....
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt, It's beautiful! I love the busyness of it and all the AMH fabrics, well done...:))
ReplyDeleteJust Brilliant!
ReplyDeletePretty, pretty, pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love all of that happy scrappy color and I'm delighted that you are back to sewing for yourself!
ReplyDeleteFun to see some of your creative work again!
ReplyDeleteI love it! And now I feel pretty silly - I bought the book & ruler a ways back, too, and if I hadn't seen this, I would have completely forgotten! Must find it somewhere in my mess of a sewing room!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt and I really like that you used a rather large floral print with many colors for the background! It adds so much interest while keeping it cohesive!
ReplyDelete*Sigh*… It's completely gorgeous and I hope it's staying with you! Lovely to see your own work again :)
ReplyDeleteit is so beautiful, and if anyone ever deserved to love something it's you!
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful A! Love your fabric choice with this design. Jxo
ReplyDeleteYour quilt turned it so pretty! I'm working on the exact quilt pattern and am really loving the ruler too. I wasn't as brave as you, so went with the white background but I'm loving it so far. Thanks for inspiring me to go scrappier :)
ReplyDeleteYou are back!! I'm in love with this quilt *sigh
ReplyDeleteReally awesome!
ReplyDeleteI just love it!!! Thanks for the info about the Triangular, also. PS You may have inspired me to finally part with some of my AMH stash, also.
ReplyDeletethis is WONDERFUL. I've enjoyed following your progress with the Soy Amado quilts (and have a deep respect for your dedication to the project) but I've also missed seeing some of your original creations - I find your work incredibly inspiring. You have a great eye - thanks for sharing this and the information about the triangle ruler! I've been considering trying out some triangles, I'll have to look into it :)
ReplyDeleteI love your riot of colours, it is such a happy looking quilt. I think you were absolutely right so steer away from white as a background. Though I enjoyed seeing all the Soy Amado quilts it's nice to see all your creative juices flowing in your own quilts.
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful! Glad you got to do some sewing 'just because'. That often leads to the best stuff. And i totally get you, the internet can sometimes overkill great things and it's nice to work on something you aren't seeing all over social media.
ReplyDeleteVery, very pretty. Love that "I'm back" feeling :)
ReplyDeleteI love the line about quilty blog land!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful. So pleased you've managed to do something for yourself after your wonderful Soy Amado quilts.
Love it!! I love the colours, the design, and also the background choices too, I am not a person that uses solids much so this is fab for me. x
ReplyDeleteLook at all of these comments! I was gong to say Alison: Colour Genius. That's all!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely lovely quilt !!
ReplyDeleteThis is very, very beautiful! i am a new quilter to the craft and blogland and I have really enjoyed following you! Thank you for sharing your talent :)
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a very eclectic, scrappy person as a rule and this quilt is so me -- I'd love to make one. Where can this booklet be purchased? I have not seen it before.
That's lovely, I can't believe that was all sewn in lines, it looks far more complicated than that - beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt is stunning, really and truly beautiful, great job!
ReplyDeleteThe color!!!! All of them.
ReplyDeleteI love it too! You did a beautiful job! Take a bow now! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's magnificent and very, very 'you'! I'm with you on the 'everyone is telling me I need to buy/watch/read ____ but it's putting me off getting it/watching it/reading it' - the more something is talked about before it's available, the less I want it!! (It's particularly relevant to telly programmes - the more trailers I see, the less inclined I am to watch the programme when it's on!)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy sewing for enjoyment and just for the sake of it, you deserve it!
Not at all perverse - sometimes I want to do something that the blogging world isn't telling me to do. And I've been eyeing this booklet. This might be the push I need!
ReplyDeleteAs always, I cannot stop admiring how you choose colors and prints! It looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteso gorgeous! thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteStunning! I've added that book and ruler to my "wishlist." (The Holidays can't come soon enough ;).
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Those fabric choices are lovely - makes the blocks look like pretty gemstones.
ReplyDeleteI love it! It is sooo you. And you finished it sooo quickly!
ReplyDeleteAbout the Soy Amado quilts: Sometimes big worthwhile projects can turn into a test of willpower and endurance, but you did it! And there are so many children who's lives are a bit better because of you. Thanks for keeping going even when quilting turned from a joy into a chore.
It was fun seeing the US package of blocks turn into quilts. (I made the crayon one at a guild meeting last year. Pretty fun.)
Fabulous!! Love your choice of colours and how you adapted the stars..love it, well done.
ReplyDeleteWhat a joy to look at it!
ReplyDeleteYou have a great sense of colors and textures! All my admiration for this!
And I'm very glad I found another one enjoying to follow only her/his heart sometimes!
I hope you're doing well Alison. Miss your posts.
ReplyDeleteI love your use of color in this quilt. The AMH fabric is so beautiful and your placement is spot on. It was a bold decision to use prints in the pieces between the blocks and looks perfect in your quilt. Looking forward to seeing all of your fmq when it is finished.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful. I always come back here to see your amazing sense of color/pattern combo. Well done.
