The invitation

The invitation to the party this Saturday says 'strictly no presents.' Where I interpreted that to mean 'but secretly I'd like a quilt' I'm not sure.

But I have.

It's OK though as the quilt is made up entirely of scraps so really it isn't like I went out and bought a present or anything so it'll be fine.

Honest.
Trust me.

I just took the triangle template that I used for this quilt, laid a strip of Kona Ash down the middle and then added random strips either side, dividing the triangles up into light and dark strips. Except for the middle/centre of the quilt where I did two of the triangles with the strips running horizontally across, so I would get a square effect.

Then I just played around with the triangles till I got a satisfying light/dark pattern going on.

The back is just some fabric to hand, spliced down the middle because it wasn't wide enough and then some wonky rectangles added in. I put one orange one in to stop it looking too safe.

Hand quilted with regular quilting cotton as well as a variety of perle colours.

What do you reckon?

Not technically a present is it?

Just a reuse of scraps really.

  1. It's a fabulous present. You just keep telling yourself it's not a gift. You could send me "not a gift" like that! Hahaha. I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

  2. What a beautiful 'strictly no presents'! I guess that's it's name then!? And when you see a sign which reads Strictly no admission! Then obviously it doesn't mean you! Grin! Oh dear have MI5 been warned!??

  5. I'm inviting you to my party!! That is one fantastic non-present. I am sure it will be treasured and that is all you really want for a quilt. Beautiful quilt and proof that a 'few scraps' can make something truly remarkable.

  7. Ooooh I'd love to not have a present like that. In fact I wonder if I start saying in October that I don't want any presents AT all for my Birthday in January I'd get a lovely quilt like this?

  9. I love it! Quilts aren't presents - they are totally utilitarian - like getting a toothbrush. :)

  10. Although I guess you might want to give it to them before or after the party so the other guests don't feel bad that they didn't break the rule.

  11. It's almost like a non-present for an un-birthday or something ;) It's beautiful, I agree with you about scraps not really being anything you went out and bought!

  15. Oh its a present alright - an awesome one! Hmm how to disguise it from looking too awesome.
Maybe you could wrap it in boring brown kraft paper and just casually toss it in the bedroom? Write From: Your Name in bic pen? ha ha - cause this is soooo a present! Its too awesome not to be - regardless the recipient is going to fricken love it!

  16. I love this and I am sure it will be loved by the "no presents" person. No one really wants no presents.

  17. You might call them scraps, but they could be pieces cut from thousands of bigger fabrics just for this quilt. In a very existential way... without you even realizing it, you have been making this quilt for years. That is so special... and hand quilted? How can you say that's not special? It is a very special quilt... no matter how much fabric it took or didn't. I think its a very special (and beautiful) gift. One that will be loved and cherished.
    Hugs,
